Family Therapy

Family difficulties rarely belong to one person. Communication breakdowns, ongoing conflict, and the strain of major life changes are often felt across the whole family, and are best worked through together.

Family therapy at Bloomfield offers a structured, confidential space for families to understand what is really driving these patterns and to build the skills, agreements, and understanding needed to move forward.

Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based frameworks rather than a single fixed model, adapting the approach to what each family actually needs. Sessions may involve the whole family together, subgroups, or individual family members, depending on what will be most useful at each stage.

Our Approach to Family Therapy

Our work is clinician-led, evidence-based, and adapted to each family's context. We draw on established frameworks including systemic and structural family therapy, alongside cognitive-behavioural and attachment-informed approaches. The goal is not to identify a single problem or a single person, but to understand how the family is functioning as a whole, and to work collaboratively toward more workable patterns.

What Happens in a Family Therapy Session?

Sessions are structured but flexible. Early sessions focus on understanding the family in context, including recent changes, ongoing pressures, and each member's perspective. Later sessions focus on practical strategies, agreements, and skills that support communication, conflict resolution, and stronger relationships. Session composition varies: some work is done with the whole family together, some with subgroups or individuals, depending on what will be most useful at each stage.

Understanding

A clearer, shared understanding of what is happening in the family, why it is happening, and how it is affecting each member.

Communication

More direct, less reactive communication — including practical skills for raising difficult topics and staying connected through disagreement.

Practical Strategies

Concrete tools and agreements the family can use in day-to-day life, adapted to each family's stage and circumstances.

Stronger Relationships

Rebuilt trust, repaired ruptures, and stronger relational foundations that continue supporting the family long after therapy ends.
